    • In teaching us charity, the Gospel instructs us in the preferential respect due to the poor and the special situation they have in society: the more fortunate should renounce some of their rights so as to place their goods more generously at the service of others. Pope Paul VI, Octogesima Adveniens (1971), n.23.

    • Without putting themselves in the place of the institutions of civil society, [Christian organisations] have to express, in their own way and rising above their particular nature, the concrete demands of the Christian faith for a just, and consequently necessary, transformation of society. Paul VI, Octogesima Adveniens (1971), n.51.

The Catholicity of Catholic Charities

13th March 202017th April 2020

In 2019, Dr Pat Jones CBE completed research with the Centre for Catholic Studies at the University of Durham, in collaboration with Caritas Social Action Network. Pat’s work explored Catholic identity and faith-based provision, among diverse charities in the Caritas network in England and Wales that seek to end homelessness in personal, regional and national contexts.

CSAN interviewed Pat in January 2020, to introduce aspects of the research, especially for a non-academic audience, and discuss some of the implications for mission, education and advocacy. To listen to the conversation, please tune in to our YouTube channel.

Research Summary, written by Dr Jones (pdf, 0.4mb)
